Mothers Day has only recently held a true meaning to me. Until you have a child, you have no idea what love is. The process of becoming a mother has been life changing for me. Love doesn't hold the same meaning as it once did. Love is meaningless if it is not unconditional. Unconditional love is known as affection without any limitations. It can be also love without conditions. When you first become a parent its if that child could never do wrong, nothing that child does will ever make you act unloving towards them.
This unfortunately doesn't last. When a child is old enough to pursue its desires we often drop unconditional love and seeming out of no where the child realize love has conditions. The child now has to wiegh its wants with its parents wants and this is where most of us begin to fall out of alinement with our higher selves. In truth the universe wants you to be true to your own wants and desires, when we change our wants in desires for others we are being unloving to ourselves. Regardless if it seems like a loving act to another. It is not unconditional love when other people like us for doing what they want or because we give them what they demand of us. Under those conditions we’re just “paying” for love in a way, do this like this or I won't love you.
To love someone unconditionally does not mean that the act of that love is always going to be easy or feel comfortable. To be there for someone when they have challenges and need to foster growth, even those individuals in the fog of confusion know that there is going to be pain and some serious discomfort -- if you choose to protect them from these feelings and emotions you’re not loving them unconditionally. Unconditional love means you tell them the truth with gentle, kind communication and you are there, without judgement, even when reflecting upon yourself.
Most of us make the mistake of trying to love others, before ourselves. We do this because we have been taught that love has conditions. So we strive to meet the conditions of others without first meeting our own. We think okay, if I go to this collage my dad likes, he will be proud of me, therefore, I can be proud of me. This is not how it works.
Unconditional love isn't something you can just give to others, you can also give it to yourself. In fact that should be the first person you give this love to. You don't need someones love to feel good, you only need your love. By doing things only because it will benefit someone else you are going in the opposite direction of self love. Your committing self hatred. Yet, its a common practice within our society, many religions even use this as the foundation for 'behaving' a certain way.
The biblical god is a good example of a god that does not love unconditionally. In fact the bible is nothing but a book riddled with conditions. I will love you and welcome you into my kingdom of heaven, followed by 500 pages of "unless you do this...". God/source/universe does not have conditions by which it loves you, it loves you because you are it and it is you. I believe this has a lot to do with why we have a hard time unconditionally loving others.
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
-Matthew 22:37
The first commandment for anyone should be to love themselves. You are an extension of the universe. Meaning you are a extension of that which you call god. If you do not love yourself you are not loving the piece of you that is the source of all that is.
People think that its impossible to love unconditionally. That is not true, we believe its not possible only because we haven't done it for ourselves. If someone is truly self loving, its impossible for them to manifest anything besides love. If everyone unconditionally loved themselves, then we would no longer manifest love that is conditional. Makes you wonder if conditional love is a byproduct of our inability to love ourselves, due to the fact we live lives that are out of alinement of what we came here to do.
We won't love unconditionally until we start paying attention to our own wants, desires, and emotions. We create the world around us, it we want to make unconditional love a possibility in our reality we have to unconditionally love ourselves. Which is hard because we have jobs and bills and sometimes we feel like telling our boss to stick where the sun don't shine, but tell yourself our job is more important. When its really not. Our emotions are ignored, or desires put off, our wants have become not what we want but what others want for us. Unconditional love comes from a place of no judgment, and most of us judge ourselves more than anyone or anything. We lie to ourselves more then we lie to others. So my challenge for you is to accept yourself. If you want to feel unconditional love, love yourself, if you want others to unconditionally love you then stop living by their conditions. We all know how to do this, all we need to do is simply, do it.
